A couple of months ago, a photographer friend of mine, David Phillips, reached out and told me he had a new e-book out. Already a fan of his photography, I was eager to see his latest work. I knew he had recently spent a considerable amount of time in Venice, but I didn’t know what the planned final product would be for the images he was there capturing.

Gondolier on bridge over canal in Venice, Italy

So often as a photographer, we’re encouraged to look up, but in Venice there’s a great deal to see if you look down — all the way into the water. The reflections of Venice’s bridges, colors, gondolas, and architecture is something people don’t often focus on, or even notice. If you’ve been to Venice, you’ve maybe noticed the reflections before, but the unique way David present his images – with an image of a full scene juxtaposed with an image of the reflection close up – is just beautiful. I found myself wanting to click many images to see if they would take me to a website where I can purchase them. I quickly reported to him that I’ll need a couple of these on my walls!

The colors of Venice reflected on the water like a mosaic

In a word, this book is mesmerizing. If it were in print, although it’d be a shame without the videos, it would be the perfect coffee table book. You can purchase it by clicking on any of the images.

⚜︎ Traveler’s note: For everyone who hasn’t been to Venice before, be sure to research aqua alta before going. Seeing flooded Venice is a sight worth seeing, but one needs to be prepared… with rubber boots!
